DeMya Walker: Meet the Sun's Jersey girl

The Connecticut Sun's DeMya Walker grapples with the Atlanta Dream's Brigitte Ardossi for a loose ball in WNBA exhibition game action Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Sun won 86-79.

Hi Connecticut Sun Fans. Welcome to my first East Coast blog.

For those of you who don't know, I was born and raised in Mt. Holly, N.J. In East coast talk that's Exit 5 off the New Jersey Turnpike. However, I have played my entire 11-year professional career on the West coast, and honestly I have become quite the Cali girl! So I am the true definition of bi-coastal.

That being said, coming back to the East coast has been rewarding to say the least. My entire family is in New Jersey, so to have my parents only a three-hour drive away instead of a seven-hour flight makes me smile. Those of you who are parents understand why, as a single mom, I am so excited about this.

Being the only mother on my team, I had to come a little early to training camp so that I could get used to my surroundings and find my daughter a school. But it's 80 degrees and sunny in Sacramento, so all of our winter clothes are packed up. And who wears jackets in the spring? Apparently people in Connecticut do, and failed to inform us of such pertinent information. So we ventured into New England jacket-less. Needless to say, we were freezing! I had forgotten the East Coast was this cold in April. One day, it was so cold my daughter thought we had moved back to China.

    Too funny.

Nevertheless, we have adjusted to the lack of warm weather, and have invested in spring jackets. I even bought a sweatshirt. That is an event for me, because I don't even own sneakers outside of my basketball shoes. I am such a girl. My closet has stilettos, flats, boots, flip flops and sandals. I hate wearing basketball clothes outside of the gym, so I don't purchase anything of the sort. My teammates laugh at me because I get dressed just to come to practice and go back home, but I like feeling pretty when I walk out the door – it counters the fact that I am not a morning person and gets me into a happier disposition.

Now that training camp is over, and we have started our season, I have been able to find two beauty salons, a beauty supply store, a manicurist/pedicurist, two good Italian restaurants and I've also caught up on all my television shows. I am still looking for the best seafood restaurant though. Suggestions?

This is going to be an amazing year for the Sun. We all get along so well, which is very important to winning a championship. Off-court chemistry translates to on-court success. It is non-stop comedy on this team. We work hard, and we enjoy being around each other. I love Asjha Jones and Renee Montgomery!!! They keep me laughing everyday! I can't wait to get on the court with Asjha. She is so awesome, and we have had some real battles against each other going all the way back to when Sacramento beat Connecticut for the 2005 WNBA championship.

It is going to be so much fun having her on the same team because she is a competitor and willing to do whatever it takes to win. Not to mention she is a Jersey Girl too.

Saturday night against Chicago was just the beginning for us, Sun fans. If you missed it, I forgive you. Just don't miss another. Jump on the bus, because we are rolling. Till next time …
