Fitch's Turgeon named state softball player of the year

Fitch High School’s Brianna Turgeon was named Gatorade Connecticut Softball Player of the Year on Wednesday.

Turgeon, a junior, is the first Fitch player to win the prestigious award, and the second Eastern Connecticut Conference athlete to be honored this spring.

Waterford senior Colin O’Keefe was named the state player of the year in baseball last Wednesday.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field.

The 5-foot-4 shortstop batted .500 this season with 28 RBI, 23 runs scored and a three home runs, leading the Falcons (16-5) to the Class LL state tournament, where they eventually fell to Bristol Central, 10-4.
