Inefficient layout of I-95 must be addressed

Here we go again - another death from a car vs. tractor trailer accident in East Lyme by Exits 75 and 76. ("Death reported from East Lyme morning crash," Oct. 6.)

I work in East Lyme just off Exit 75 and felt and heard the last multi-fatal accident with a tractor-trailer that left three people dead in the same spot. After outcry from the public about the safety of this area the state did what they do best - a Band-Aid fix. Putting up jersey barriers and changing the speed limit.

I-95 is no longer safe for motorists. It was designed more than 40 years ago when traffic was not an issue. We are in the major connecting route for N.Y. and the rest of New England and the beaches. I have to cross from Route 1 to get onto I-395 daily and it is a death race. Trying to accelerate to highway speed, dodging tractor-trailers and cars doing 70, 80, 90-plus mph is ridiculous.

Every morning coming to work I am passed by cars, including state troopers, doing well in excess of the posted 50 mph speed limit as if I'm standing still. What is needed is widening of the highway and an access from Route 1 directly to I-395 without having to enter I-95. Until that happens, I am afraid more people will die needlessly.
