Nip student loan debt in the bud instead

The writer of "Help professionals by forgiving student loan debt" (Oct. 10), suggests the federal government should forgive the debt of former higher education students who cannot find employment. While this may be a noble idea, it is the absolute wrong thing to do.

For the government to forgive the student debt either the deficit increases, taxes increase or other spending is cut. At the start of this school year higher education student debt was approximately $1 trillion.

Too many students are selecting schools not on value, but rather on prestige or amenities such as private rooms, fitness centers or location. Perhaps they should consider earning the same degree at a less expensive but equally qualified school and not be so eager to finance their education with so much debt.

The same day the letter appeared in The Day there was an article about a local business that could not find welders to fill its needs. Perhaps some of these unemployed graduates or potential students should consider working at a different job to pay for their education.
