    UConn updates, Maine concerns

A few quick hits and updates from the world of UConn basketball:

-- Sophomore Shabazz Napier had a dental procedure Wednesday and missed practice. He will be ready to play against Maine Thursday in Hartford.

Game time is 7 p.m. at the XL Center.

-- UConn coach Jim Calhoun is 14-0 in games against his former assistants.

Maine coach Ted Woodward served as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff in his first three seasons (1986-89). In two previous trips to UConn, Woodward lost 71-54 in 2009 and 105-60 in 2007.

“Ted Woodward was a great guy to have on staff and was part of things here when we started it going in the right direction,” Calhoun said.

Here’s how other UConn assistants fared against Calhoun: Steve Pikiell (Stony Brook) 0-3, Dave Leitao (DePaul, Northeastern) 0-3, Howie Dickenman (Central Connecticut) 0-2, Karl Hobbs (George Washington) 0-2, Glen Miller (Brown) 0-1, Tom Moore (Quinnipiac) 0-1.

-- The fourth-ranked Huskies continue to search for consistent, especially on the offensive end. Napier and sophomore Jeremy Lamb are carrying UConn, averaging 21.0 and 25.0 points, respectively, through two games.

UConn is averaging 74 points per game.

“I continue to be concerned about our offense and this game will be another good test for us in that regard,” Calhoun said. “We saw better play out of some guys (against Wagner Monday), but need to see more consistent play for 40 minutes.

“We have Maine, then Coppin State and then head to Atlantis for what will be three very tough games, so we need to figure it out in a hurry.”

UConn plays Coppin State Sunday afternoon in Hartford before heading to the Paradise Island, Bahamas next week to compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

-- Junior Alex Oriakhi on the state of the Huskies: “I definitely feel coach is right about us needing to be more consistent. We can have all of the expectations and hype in the world, but when the ball goes up, it all starts with working harder than the other guy.

“I think we all have to concentrate on doing those little things, getting a loose ball, tipping a rebound to a teammate, things like that. You can’t just walk out there and expect to think talent is all you need.

“There’s no reason for us to get outhustled and no reason for us to not get after it for 40 minutes. If we do that, the results will come.”

-- Woodward is looking forward to playing UConn.

“I don’t know if we’ve ever played reigning national champion,” Woodward said. “I have tremendous respect for the level that they’re at. … It’s a great opportunity. This is something our guys look forward to.”

-- Doubt any college basketball team this season will make as big a jump in competition from one game to another as Maine will tonight.

Maine beat Maine-Machias, 113-49, in its season opener on Monday and now plays a national championship contender.

-- The Black Bears took a five-hour bus drive Wednesday from Orono, Maine, to Hartford.
