Quinn on Drummond: "His potential is limitless."

St. Thomas More basketball coach Jere Quinn has coached and developed his share of future college basketball players.

Andre Drummond was one of his favorites. And not just because he helped the Chancellors win a National Prep School tournament championship last season.

"The great thing about Andre is, he's a very good basketball player but he's a better kid," Quinn said Saturday after his team beat Winchendon, 85-51, to improve to 8-0.

Drummond spent two years at St. Thomas More in Oakdale before heading to UConn. He was a model citizen.

"He bought into a lot of things that we try to teach here -- team, being humble, having integrity in everything you do," Quinn said. "He was a wonderful addition to our school community."

At UConn, Drummond has struggled at times while trying to adjust to a higher level of play.

Eventually, he'll figure it all out, Quinn said.

"People are all expecting the world out of him," Quinn said. "He shows flashes of brilliance and he shows flashes of being an 18-year-old. His potential is limitless and he'll work for you."

"Does he get frustrated like every 18-year-old? Yes."

Through nine games, Drummond is averaging 7.8 points and 6.0 rebounds. He leads the team with 25 blocks overall.

He's also been foul-prone, committing a team-high tying 23 fouls. He's working on trying to stay on his feet.

Quinn often worked with Drummond on sound defensive position.

"We worked on it daily with him," Quinn said. "We watched him play Harvard the other day and he is bodying the big people, and he's taller.

"Step back, they can't shoot over you. ... Move your feet.

"If I had a dollar for every time I said that, I'd be driving a new vehicle. Eventually, it's going to sink in. We're very happy where he's at, so we get a chance to see play all the time. He's a wonderful kid."
