    All-Area H.S. football team/defense

    • East Lyme senior Chad Berry anchored his team's defense at linebacker. He is a two-time member of the Class L all-state team and All-ECC Large Division team. Berry also earned all-conference honors in lacrosse. He is a high honors student who is interested in Princeton, Dartmouth and Brown.

    • Waterford senior Kobey Coburn was among the top linebackers in the ECC and named the Most Valuable Player of the victory over East Lyme on Thanksgiving. Coburn lists Morehead State, Urbana, Central Connecticut, UMass and Grand Valley State among his college choices.

    • Bacon Academy senior Alex Couture caught 38 passes for 528 yards and seven touchdowns, rushed for three TDs, returned punts and kicks and was the punter for the Bobcats. He was one of the most versatile players in the league, returning a fake punt for a touchdown against Ledyard. He was named to the Class M all-state team. He finished his career with 99 receptions for 1,271 yards and 18 touchdowns, had three career kickoff returns for touchdowns and had eight career intereceptions.

    • Valley Regional/Old Lyme senior Justus Doane was named to the Class S all-state team as a defensive lineman. He had 62 tackles, one interception, one touchdown and two fumble recoveries. He also plays lacrosse.

    • New London senior Jevon Elmore scored seven touchdowns on offense, two on special teams and three on defense this season, leading the Whalers with seven interceptions. Elmore is a member of the All-ECC Large Division team and Class L all-state team. Elmore has offers to play football at West Point and Central Connecticut. He is also considering Georgetown, Colgate, Lehigh, Columbia and Fordham.

    • Waterford senior Brian Gencarelli was one of the best two-way players in the ECC. Gencarelli had 900 passing yards, 400 rushing yards, six interceptions and two defensive scores. He was named to the Class M all-state team and to the All-ECC Medium Division team. Gencarelli is considering Nichols College, Western New England, Curry College and Western Connecticut.

    • Valley Regional/Old Lyme senior Owen Guarino was part of a defense that helped the team make the Class S semifinals. Guarino had 93 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

    • Ledyard senior Dallas Smith made the Class M all-state team at linebacker, with eight sacks, more than 80 tackles and four fumble recoveries. He also forced a safety in Ledyard's victory over Waterford that secured the Medium Division title. Smith is an honor student considering St. Anselm, Western New England, Florida International and Florida Atlantic.

    • Waterford senior Y-Kim Sheppard had 27 tackles as a starting defensive back. He also gained 727 yards and six touchdowns, named to the All-ECC Medium Division team. Sheppard, who also participates in indoor and outdoor track, is an honor student who is interested in Lafayette, Georgetown, Central Connecticut, Brown and Lehigh.

    • Montville senior Ken Strecker started on offense and defense. He was named to the All-ECC Medium Division team. Strecker also played for Montville's 2010 Class M state championship baseball team.

    • Montville sophomore Will Thompson emerged as one of coach Tanner Grove's top players and most pleasant surprises of the season. Thompson was named to the All-ECC Medium Division team on defense.

    • Fitch senior Cody Wheeler was perhaps the ECC's best defensive tackle, leading a Fitch defense that blanked New London. Wheeler was named to the All-ECC Large Division team. He lists Heidelberg University, Nichols, Western New England and Norwich among his college choices.

    • Waterford senior Ivar Wirta was named to the All-ECC Medium Division team for the second straight year and to the Class M all-state team on defense. Wirta is an honor student who is interested in Western Connecticut.
