Rocky the harbor seal, the oldest marine mammal at Mystic Aquarium, died on Friday.
Aquarium spokeswoman Erin Merz said Sunday that the 31-year-old Rocky had been sick for the past three weeks.
She said the aquarium had taken Rocky to the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University last week for some additional tests. She said those tests revealed that Rocky had cancer and the decision was made to euthanize him.
Rocky had come to the aquarium in 1999 after being rescued in California and had fathered two pups. He had lived in the Pacific Northwest exhibit with the Stellar sea lions and was one of the aquarium's best known animals, according to Merz.
"It's definitely a sad day for us. Our team did all they could for him," she said.
