NL's Dunn named Gatorade state player of the year

New London High School's Kris Dunn was named the Gatorade Connecticut Player of the Year in boys' basketball on Thursday morning.

Dunn, a 6-foot-4 guard who will attend Providence College this fall, averaged 31.4 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks per game for the Whalers, who went 25-3 and reached the Class LL semifinals.

Dunn, who will play in the McDonald's All-American Game next weekend in Chicago, is the second New London player to earn the award. Forward Allan Chaney was selected in 2008. Last year's winner was Dunn's good friend and former AAU teammate Andre Drummond, who just completed his freshman season at UConn.

"Kris Dunn has been a pleasure to coach during his four years as a varsity starter," New London coach Craig Parker said in a statement released by Gatorade. "He works extremely hard in the classroom and his passion for basketball is unsurpassed by anyone I've known in my 25 years of coaching."
