Camel tracks

• The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team has won a season-high three straight to climb to 5-4 overall. Senior face-off specialist Chuck Czerkawski won 79 percent of his draws and had 15 ground balls in two wins last week.

• Lowell Abbott leads the women's lacrosse team in scoring with 29 points on 24 goals and five assists. Bri Miller ranks second with 28 points on 20 goals and eight assists for the Camels (4-6).

• The sailing programs continue to climb the Sailing World Magazine college rankings. The women are ranked fifth and the coed team is 15th.

Last weekend the coed program placed eighth in the Southern New England Team Race on the Thames River.

• Sophomore Mike LeDuc is second in the national Division III performance list in the 3.000-meter steeplechase.

• The Collegiate Water Polo Association named freshman Nicky Jasbon the Division III rookie of the week. Jasbon had 18 goals in five matches, including 10 in a 27-10 win over Utica College Saturday. She has 28 goals, 11 assists and a team-high 37 steals.

• Men's basketball coach Tom Satran named Rob Harrigan and John Bullitt co-captains for the 2012-13 season.

Harrigan, a small forward, led the New England Small College Athletic Conference in minutes played (35) last season and averaged 8.8 points and 4.3 rebounds.

"Rob is one of the hardest working players we've ever had here," Satran said.

Bullitt was one of the team's most reliable players last season.

"John is a perfect example of being coachable…," Satran said. "He is a great role model to our younger players, a model student athlete an, and an ever improving performer on the court."

Mariners making a splash

• Mitchell College softball players Marissa Thomas and Lindsey Romagnino earned New England Collegiate Conference weekly honors.

Thomas, a senior from New London, was named the conference pitcher of the week after pitching four complete games while striking out 17 and walking one and posting a 2.42 earned run average in four wins. She had a career-high 10 strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader against Bay Path and threw a two-hit shutout in the second game.

A freshman outfielder, Romagnino batted a team-best .615 with three RBI and four runs scored, recording a hit in all four games. She went 5-for-5 to lead the Mariners past Elms in the second game of a doubleheader. On the season, she ranks second on the team with a .308 batting average.

• The men's tennis team continues to dominate the NECC weekly awards. Senior Andrew Small received the player of the week and freshman Rajan Bawa was the top rookie. Both Mariners posted wins in both singles and doubles, helping their team go 3-0 last week.

Bear sightings

Coast Guard Academy senior All-American Hayley Feindel returned to the lineup last week after missing 13 games with an injury. She delivered a pair of shutouts in a sweep of Clark and became the Division III all-time leader in innings pitched with 905. For her efforts, Feindel was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference pitcher of the week. The Bears are 16-10 overall, 4-4 in the conference.

• The duo of senior captains Nick Martin and Greg Mitchell received NEWMAC men's tennis doubles team of the week honors. Playing at No. 1, they combined to win versus Babson and Springfield, improving to 6-1. The Bears are 7-2 overall, 2-0 in the league.

Around the region

• UConn Avery-Point graduate Kyle Cummings is leading the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team with a .396 batting average and a team-best 36 hits. Cummings, a senior infielder, is tied for second with 16 RBI.

• The Western Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team is loaded with local athletes. Ryan Gillis of Norwich leads the team in goals (26) and tied for second in assists (11). Ryan Foster, a sophomore from Ledyard, has 23 goals and nine assists while senior J.C. Flaherty of Old Lyme has two goals and one assist. Kevin Seery and Zach Bartlett, two freshmen from East Lyme, also are on the roster.

• Waterford's Brianna Strecker and Bacon Academy graduate Meghan Dunn are key members of the Bridgewater State softball team. A junior catcher, Strecker is batting .260 with three home runs and 16 RBI. Dunn, a junior pitcher, has an 8-4 record with a 2.69 earned run average.

• St. Bernard graduate Tyler Wild, a sophomore infielder, had three hits and an RBI in the St. Michael's College baseball team's doubleheader loss to 12th-ranked LeMoyne College Saturday.

• Central Connecticut State University senior Sam Alexander, a former Waterford standout, broke the school record in the 10K Friday while competing at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Cal. He finished in a personal best 29:21.06, beating the previous school record of 29:22 set in 1979, and placed 10th out of 42 runners in his heat.

• Hannah Benoit, a St. Bernard graduate, won her No. 4 singles match for the St. Michael's College tennis team in an 8-1 win over St. Anselm College.

• Arielle Cooper, a Fitch graduate, is enjoying a terrific junior season as a member of the nationally-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University softball team. Cooper slugged her 18th and 19th career home runs and had six hits and two RBI Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Keene State. She is ranked second all-time on the school home run list behind Molly Rathbun who has 23.

The Little East Conference named Cooper the softball player of the week. She went 9-for-18 with three home runs in four wins last week. Cooper is batting .415 with a team-leading six home runs and 12 RBI. The No. 4 Warriors are 17-1.

• Freshman Nina Wojtkiewicz, a Griswold graduate, went 3-for-3 with two triples and an RBI in the WCSU softball team's 10-2 win over Plymouth State in the second game of a doubleheader. She also was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored in a 7-4 win in the first game.

Wojtkiewicz raised her batting average to .325 to go with five home runs and 19 RBI.

• Griswold's Taylor Lane is a sophomore pitcher for the Sacred Heart University softball team. She has a 1-0 record with a 3.80 earned run average. In a 6-5 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Friday, she started and went 4.1 innings and earned a no-decision.
