Seven students get $2,000 apiece

Groton - Charter Oak Federal Credit Union has announced $14,000 in college scholarship awards to seven students from around the region.

The Charter Oak scholarship winners, who received $2,000 each, include Qing Ge of Uncasville, a Montville High School student; Olivia Jean Burdick of Waterford, who attends the University of Connecticut; Fallon Wilson and Paige Palmieri of Niantic, both East Lyme High School students, and Fabjola Qosja of Jewett City, currently attending Griswold High School.

Other winners received Charter Oak scholarships given in memory of longtime credit union employees.

Arianna Athenian of Waterford, a Waterford High School student, took home the LuAnn Dugas Memorial Scholarship, while the Louise Jackson Community Outreach Scholarship went to Cody J. DeGray of Brooklyn, a student at Woodstock Academy.

The Jackson scholarship is funded by Charter Oak employees, who pay a small fee to participate each Friday in the financial institution's casual-dress day.

Scholarship winners are chosen based on community involvement, extracurricular activities and academic achievement.

Charter Oak has 12 credit union branches throughout New London and Windham counties.
