The Jim Calhoun Celebrity Classic Charity all-star basketball game is missing one key member of the UConn basketball family.

Jim Calhoun suffered a fractured hip when he had a bike accident today near his summer home in Madison. He was taken toJohn Dempsey Hospital at the UConn Health Center in Farmington where he'll have surgery tonight.

He's expected to make a full recovery, according to UConn officials.

"He hit some sand," associate coach George Blaney said. "Because he's got the clips on, it kind of forces you to the ground. I feel bad."

His former players and assistant coaches reacted to the news prior to tonight's game at the Mohegan Sun.

Jeremy Lamb heard about the accident shortly before tip-off.

"My prayers go out to him," Lamb said.

Kemba Walker said: "I don't know what to say. Wish he was coming (tonight). Things happen in life. He'll be all right."

Donnell Beverly: "When you hear something like that, you automatically think he'll bounce back."

Rip Hamilton, who returned to the area for the first time in 10 years, had this to say: "He's The Man. He didn't just produce great players. He produced us into great people and great men. The opportunity to come back and do something positive for him is always a great thing."

Former assistant coach Steve Pikiell, now the head coach at Stony Brook, could only smile and shake his head.

"What bone hasn't he broken?" Pikiell said. "It's unbelievable."

In 2009, Calhoun broke several ribs in a bike accident during his charity ride in Simsbury.

Calhoun also is a three-time cancer survivor and missed time last season because of a lower back problem.
