Stonington - First Selectman Ed Haberek is overseeing the Planning Department.
Since the death of Director of Planning William Haase in April, Town Planner Keith Brynes has been the acting director of planning.
The 2012-13 budget, meanwhile, includes funding for only six months of the position, beginning in January.
Haberek said that according to the town charter, the responsibility for the position falls to the first selectman if it is vacant. Haberek said the move, which went into effect Monday, will allow Brynes to return to his job as town planner and focus on reviewing zoning applications rather than with personnel, budgetary and other matters.
"He's had a lot on his plate," Haberek said. "I'll be managing the personnel, but I will not be getting involved in land use."
He said he will discuss the director's position with the Planning and Zoning Commission in November and will raise the idea of looking to expand it to include such areas as economic development, grants and special projects.
