Volleyball

• Bay Path's Kacie Bayreuther, a sophomore libero from East Lyme, was named the New England College Conference Defensive Player of the Year in volleyball on Monday. She was also selected to the All-NECC first team.

• Three Mitchell College players were also honored by the NECC. Freshman Amanda Garcia was named Rookie of the Year, senior Arianna Thomas was an all-conference second team choice for the second straight year and junior Nicole Terni of Montville was named honorable mention.

Garcia recorded 53 kills in eight conference matches and had the highest hitting percentage (.152) on the team. She finished with 148 kills and a team-best 38 blocks in 22 matches. Thomas had 131 kills while leading the Mariners in digs (344) and service aces (47). Terni led the team and ranked third in the NECC in assists (177) and assists per set (7.08) in conference action. Overall she had 544 assists, 252 digs, 48 kills and 34 service aces.

Men's soccer

• Three Mitchell players were selected to the All-NECC second team, sophomore forward Frank Williams, senior defender Howie Johnson of New London and junior midfielder Zachary Simmons. In addition, sophomore goalie Ramazan Sinani was an honorable mention choice.

Women's soccer

• Mitchell College won the NECC team sportsmanship award while sophomore forward Alexandra Charles and junior goalie Kaylee Woodford for Niantic were named to the All-NECC second team.

Football

• Coast Guard Academy senior linebacker Parker Bateson was named the New England Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the Bears' 42-13 win over Maine Maritime on Saturday.

Bateso• had a career-high 16 tackles, 10 of which were solo stops. He recorded four tackles for loss, had a sack, and recovered two fumbles. Bateson finished the season with a team-leading 83 tackles (46 solo), with 10 for loss, two sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries as the Bears (5-4) finished above .500 for the first time since 2007.

Men's cross country

• Eastern Connecticut State University's Lee Cattanach, a sophomore from New London and the Williams School, earned all-conference honors recently with his fifth place finish at the Little East Conference championship meet in Westfield, Mass. Cattanach finished the 8,000-meter course in 26:21 to become ECSU's first All-Little East performer since 1995.

Women's cross country

• Colleen Ahern, a junior from Salem and East Lyme High School, helped the University of New England capture the recent Commonwealth Coast Conference championship in Springfield, Mass. UNE finished with 37 points to win the title for the first time since joining the CCC in 1999.

Ahern, New England's No. 2 runner, placed fifth overall in the race, completing the 6,000-meter course in 23:46. She earned All-CCC honors.
