Coast Guard's Resch, Meggers, Bateson earn all-division honors in football

Coast Guard Academy quarterback Jon Resch, right, earned first team All-NEFC Bogan Division honors Thursday for his record-setting season, joining teammates Pat Meggers and Parker Bateson on the first team.

The Coast Guard Academy football team, which finished 5-4 to record its first winning season since 2007, had three players named to the New England Football Conference Bogan Division all-star team Thursday and seven players named to the second team.

Senior record-setting quarterback Jon Resch, senior wide receiver Pat Meggers and senior linebacker Parker Bateson were all named to the first team, earning all-division honors for the first time in their careers.

"It is a tremendous honor for these guys, who took a lot of pride and played hard on every practice and game snap," Coast Guard coach Bill George said. "They worked hard, finished with a winning record and deserve every accolade that they receive."

Resch rewrote the Coast Guard record book this season, as he set single-season school records with 215 completions, 360 attempts, 2,514 passing yards, 2,675 yards of total offense and 23 touchdowns. Resch leaves as the Bears' all-time leader with 4,569 passing yards, 4,883 yards of total offense and 38 touchdowns.

Meggers, who made the move to wide receiver from running back for his final season, had 42 receptions, leading the team with 746 yards and seven touchdowns. He finished his career with 1,044 receiving yards.

Bateson led the Bears with 83 tackles, 10 for loss, to go with a pair of sacks and two fumble recoveries. He was named the NEFC Defensive Player of the Week after Saturday's victory over Maine Maritime, in which he recorded a career-high 16 tackles.

Coast Guard's second-team selections included three offensive linemen in senior center Jed Daleiden, junior guard Mike Vitrano and senior tackle Jacob Bibb. Other members of the second team were senior tight end Casey Paris, senior defensive end John Manganiello, junior defensive back Evan Rothfeld and freshman kicker Tyler Henning.

In addition, Worcester State defensive back Y-Kim Sheppard of Waterford was named the NEFC Bogan Division Defensive Rookie of the Year. Sheppard finished with 46 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, while starting all 10 games.
