Hand remains No. 1 in The Day's H.S. football poll

Only seven teams ranked in The Day's Top 10 state high school football coaches poll played last week. They all won, thus there were no changes in this week's poll.

It's a guarantee that there will be movement after the Thanksgiving week games because there are two games involving Top 10 teams.

The week's biggest game is Thursday's No. 3 Staples of Westport at No. 7 Greenwich. The Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic League championship is on the line as well as a home quarterfinal in the CIAC Class LL playoffs. Both teams are 8-0.

Wednesday, fifth-ranked Masuk of Monroe plays at No. 10 Newtown with the South-West Conference championship at stake. Masuk (9-0) has beaten the Nighthawks two years in a row for the title. Newtown (9-0) will be without quarterback Dan Hebert, who suffered a season-ending injury in a Nov. 9 game against Bunnell of Stratford.

No. 9 Norwich Free Academy (9-0) remains the region's only ranked team and will play at New London Thursday in the 151th edition of the nation's oldest high school football rivarly.

Fitch (8-1) is the only other area team receiving votes.
