    State police charge 60 with DUI, hand out 1,561 speeding tickets over holiday weekend

    State police announced the results Sunday of their stepped-up holiday enforcement effort in which additional troopers were assigned to target problems such as driving under the influence and aggressive driving.

    From midnight Wednesday to 9:20 p.m. Sunday, state police made 60 arrests for drunken driving, issued 1,561 speeding tickets, 85 citations for not wearing a seat belt and issued 2,968 moving violations for offenses such as making an unsafe lane change, following too closely, failure to signal and using a cellphone while driving.

    They also investigated 402 accidents including 57 with injury and two fatal crashes in Southington and Beacon Falls. They also responded to 10,209 calls for service. Updated figures for the last few hours of the enforcement period are expected to be available this morning.

    During the same period last year, state police made 65 drunken driving arrests, issued 1,376 speeding tickets, 417 seat belt violations and 2,745 moving violations. Last year, there were 389 accidents with two fatalities.
