PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island School Commissioner Deborah Gist says the Department of Education is taking a close look at school safety procedures after the school shootings in Connecticut.

Gist told WPRO-AM on Monday that she has spoken to State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell to see what can be done to increase safety in the schools.

She said she was watching what happened in Connecticut closely and comparing it to the security procedures that Rhode Island schools currently have in place.
