UConn scholarship fund to honor victims, aid families

Storrs - A memorial scholarship fund has been established at the University of Connecticut to honor the victims of last week's killings at Sandy Hook School in Newtown.

The Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Connecticut will provide financial aid at UConn for any students who currently attend the elementary school, as well as siblings of those killed in the assault and dependents of teachers and other adults who lost their lives.

More than 650 individual gifts were received in the fund's first 24 hours, and several school organizations, grass-roots groups and others have expressed interest in contributing donations. The gifts come in addition to an initial donation of $80,000 made by UConn women's basketball coach Geno Auriemma and his wife, Kathy.

Donations will be collected through the University of Connecticut Foundation. There are several ways to donate: text 50555 with uconn newtown; visit www.friends.uconn.edu/sandyhook; or mail checks to the UConn Foundation at 2390 Alumni Drive Unit 3206, Storrs, CT 06269-3206. Put Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund in the memo.
