New London – Police said a city man fleeing questioning Monday threw a loaded handgun into some bushes before being detained by police after a struggle.

Police approached Troy Johnson, 20, of 80 Maple Ave., Apt. 3, on Nob Hill Road around 11:38 a.m. because he fit the description of a domestic dispute suspect. When approached, Johnson fled officers, threw a loaded .38 caliber handgun in some bushes before being apprehended after a short foot chase and brief struggle. Johnson was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana, police said, and was charged with interfering with an officer, criminal attempt to commit assault on an officer, illegal possession of a firearm without a permit and illegal possession of marijuana.

Police later learned Johnson was not the man involved in the domestic dispute, which was reported Monday morning in the 300 block of Ocean Avenue and which initiated the investigation.

Johnson is held in lieu of a $25,000 bond and will be arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court.
