    Weather prompts school closings, cancellations and parking bans

    The latest cancellations and school closings due to wintry weather:

    [naviga:ul][naviga:li]East Lyme's Board of Education meetings scheduled tonight have been canceled. The Board of Education Public Hearing on the budget has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 4 in the High School auditorium. A special meeting on the budget will immediately follow. All student after-school activities, except day-care programs, for the public schools have been canceled. A rescheduled date for the Salem – East Lyme Cooperative meeting is to be determined.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Stonington public schools closed early. There will be no afternoon kindergarten or preschool today.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Montville public schools closed early and afternoon kindergarten class have been cancelled[/naviga:li][naviga:li]The Groton Board of Education has canceled tonight's curriculum committee and committee of the whole meetings. The meetings have not yet been rescheduled.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Ledyard public schools had early dismissal today.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Lyme –Old Lyme schools closed early today. All afternoon and evening school activities have been canceled.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]The University of Connecticut has announced that all classes that begin at 2:45 or later this afternoon as well as all evening classes at the Avery Point campus in Groton are canceled. All classes that begin at 3 p.m. and later at the Storrs campus are also canceled.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Waterford's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting at 7 tonight has been canceled.The commission has tentatively rescheduled the meeting for Feb. 4 at 7 p.m.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]Today's Norwich Redevelopment Agency meeting has been canceled.[/naviga:li][naviga:li]The Department of Motor Vehicles canceled all road skills tests scheduled before 10 a.m. Tuesday. Anyone with a scheduled road test can call DMV to choose a new date:  860-263-5700, Hartford area; 800-842-8222 outside Hartford area. DMV is also attempting to contact customers with road test appointments to advise them of the schedule change.

    Parking bans

    Norwich: As of 2:30 p.m. today, police remind residents that a winter parking ban is in place that prohibits motorists from parking on the odd side of all city streets during the storm and subsequent snow removal efforts.

    Residents are prohibited from parking on either side of certain narrow city streets, police said (list follows).

    Those in violation of the ban will be fined $25 and will be responsible to pay the costs of a tow.

    Residents and property owners are also reminded that they must remove or sand any snow, sleet or ice from the sidewalks abutting their property within three hours of the storm.

    Parking is prohibited on both sides of the following streets: Old Cemetery Lane, North Cliff Street, Shetucket Avenue, Terrace Avenue, Fourth Street from Prospect Street to Gilmour Street, Fifth Street from Prospect Street to Page Street, Lake Street, Pond Street, Freeman Avenue, Boswell Avenue from Lake Street to Arnold Street, Sunnyside Avenue (Laurel Hill section), Fairmont Street, from #16 to School Street, Carter Avenue, Fountain Street, from #16 to School Street, Summer Street, Center Street and Quarry Street.
