Keith Appling led a pivotal run early in the second half and finished with 24 points and seven assists to help Michigan State beat Illinois on Thursday night.

The Spartans (18-4, 7-2 Big Ten) scored the first 14 points of the second half to take their first lead.

The Fighting Illini (15-7, 2-6) lost for the fifth time in six games. They had a chance to be the first team with four wins over currently ranked teams.

Illinois started strong and responded to rallies with shots and stops in the first half. Michigan State played with a lot of energy in the second half. Appling alternated making shots and setting up teammates to score in helping turn a 10-point deficit into a 41-37 lead.

Women

No. 5 Duke, Miami 43

Tricia Liston scored 17 points, Chelsea Gray added 16 and Duke used a huge run early in the second half to rout Miami.

Miami led 33-31 following a layup from Shawnice Wilson with 18:17 left before the Blue Devils scored 20 straight points coming from five different players.

Alexis Jones had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils (19-1, 9-0 ACC).

Krystal Saunders scored 15 points to lead Miami (14-7, 5-5). Wilson added eight points and eight rebounds.

Wisconsin 63, No. 7 Penn State 61

Morgan Paige scored a career-high 33 points to lead Wisconsin to an upset over Penn State.

Tiera Stephens scored the game-winner on a putback with 5 seconds left to end the Nittany Lions' 12-game winning streak.

Stephens scored five points and had 11 rebounds and Jacki Gulczynski added 16 for Wisconsin (10-11, 2-6 Big Ten). It had lost seven of its last eight games.

Maggie Lucas scored 18 points and Mia Nickson added 11 for Penn State (17-3, 7-1).

The Lady Lions routed the Badgers 84-40 at home two weeks ago for their most lopsided victory since 2001.

No. 9 Tennessee 88, Mississippi State 45

Kamiko Williams scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in her first start of the season as Tennessee routed Mississippi State for its 10th win in its last 11 games.

Williams started in place of injured center Isabelle Harrison, who will undergo surgery Friday on her left knee. The senior guard had six assists and six steals to go along with her double-double.

Meighan Simmons scored 21 points for the Lady Vols (17-4, 8-0 SEC). Martha Alwal had 16 points and nine rebounds for Mississippi State (9-12, 1-7), which has never beaten Tennessee in 34 attempts.

No. 11 North Carolina 72, No. 20 Florida State 62

Xylina McDaniel scored 19 points and Waltiea Rolle added 18 and 10 rebounds as North Carolina held off Florida State, giving coach Sylvia Hatchell her 899th win.

North Carolina led by 19 in the first half, thanks to 14 points by Rolle. But the Seminoles (17-4, 7-3) held the Tar Heels scoreless the final 4:01 leading into intermission, then climbed back to take their first lead of the game at 53-52 with 9:01 remaining.

North Carolina (20-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) answered with a 10-2 run. After a 3-pointer by Florida State's Alex Deluzio, McDaniel made back-to-back jumpers and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt sank two free throws with 2:15 remaining.

Leonor Rodriguez scored 18 points and Deluzio 16 for the Seminoles, who saw their five-game winning streak end.

No. 13 Georgia 65, Alabama 59

Khaalidah Miller scored 11 points off the bench as Georgia held off Alabama.

Jasmine Hassell added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (18-3, 6-2), who won for the 850th time in program history, becoming just the 10th Division I school to reach the mark.

No. 14 Purdue 59, Indiana 42

Sam Ostarello had 14 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night to lead Purdue to a win over Indiana.

KK Houser and April Wilson scored 12 points apiece for the Boilermakers (18-3, 7-1 Big Ten). Taylor Manuel added 11 points for Purdue, which held a 45-30 rebounding edge.

Linda Rubene scored 13 points and Aulani Sinclair scored 11 for Indiana (10-11, 1-7). Rubene and Sinclair each had a team-high six rebounds. The Hoosiers have dropped six straight.

The Boilermakers never trailed and opened up a quick 12-2 lead, but Indiana tied the game three times late in the first half, the last at 26 before Purdue scored the last six points of the half.

Purdue holds a 50-25 edge in the all-time series.

No. 16 Texas A&M 60, Vanderbilt 52

Courtney Walker scored 20 points to lead Texas A&M to a victory over Vanderbilt.

Walker, a freshman, was 10 for 13 from the field in matching her season high in points as the Aggies (17-5, 7-1) tied No. 8 Kentucky for second place in the Southeastern Conference.

Texas A&M trailed 27-24 at halftime, but had two 10-0 runs in the second half to win its fifth straight game overall and 11th in a row at home.

Walker was the only Aggie to score in double figures, but Kelsey Bone had eight points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Christina Foggie had 17 points to lead Vanderbilt, and Tiffany Clarke had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Commodores (14-7, 4-4).

The teams met for the first time since 1997.

Illinois 74, No. 24 Iowa 62

Karisma Penn scored 18 points, Adrienne GodBold and Amber Moore added 17 apiece, and Illinois closed with a 14-2 run over the final 5:11 to knock off Iowa.

Penn pulled down eight rebounds for the Illini (12-8, 5-3 Big Ten), whose last victory over Iowa in Champaign was Feb. 9, 2003. Ivory Crawford chipped in 14 points to help Illinois surpass its win total from the 2011-12 season.

Samantha Logic had 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Hawkeyes (16-6, 5-3) but also committed eight of Iowa's 27 turnovers. Illinois converted those turnovers into 30 points.

What had been a back-and-forth game swung the Illini's way after Iowa's Jaime Printy tied it at 60 with a layup with 5:31 to go. The Hawkeyes wouldn't score again until Kayla Timmerman's jumper with 13 seconds left, after Illinois had reeled off 14 unanswered points.

No. 25 Delaware 70, Georgia State 38

Elena Delle Donne scored 25 points and Delaware won its 12th consecutive game beating Georgia State.

The Blue Hens (17-3, 8-0 Colonial Athletic Association) won their 27th straight regular-season conference game.

Delle Donne scored 19 of her points in the first half, almost matching the first-half total for the Panthers (10-9, 2-6), as Delaware opened a 40-21 lead. The All-America forward, who hit 9 of 19 shots from the field, played just 8 minutes in the second half.

The Blue Hens dominated the boards, holding a 48-23 rebounding advantage, but Georgia State's Cody Paulk did her best to provide an inside presence for her team. The Panthers' career leader in blocked shots swatted away six, and she also had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Akeema Richards added 10 points and Danielle Parker 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens.
