East Lyme Middle School's girls and boys swimming and diving team won the Combined Connecticut State Swimming and Diving Open Championships for the first time Jan. 27, beating perennial favorite Brookfield in a field of 15 teams at Southern Connecticut State University's Bruce Hutchinson Natatorium.
The East Lyme team earned 1,011 points followed by Brookfield with 984 points and Haddam Killingworth rounding out the top three with 912 points.
The ELMS swim and dive team includes Maddie Anthony, Trey Bazinet, Abby Bessire, Christina Bi, Caitlin Biondi, Carlie Biondi, Syd Buckley, Victoria Chen, Maeve Counter, Alexis Dumais, Jason Good, Eric Gu, Lauren Harrington, Mackenzie Hawk, Hiruni Jayawickreme, Alex Jordan and Amelia Kozlowski. Also, Katie Long, Hannah McLaughlin, Rajiv Manohar, Garret Nesta, Kate Orefice, Maddie Panlilio, Megan Opsahl, Chara Proud, Josie Provost, Lauren Real, Daniel Rubio, Michelle Saracovan, Sarah Singer, Wyatt Smith, Eric Song, Gretchen Stelter, Sarah White, Kat Wyatt and Syd Wyatt.
The girls' team of Carlie Biondi, Michelle Saracovan, Alexis Dumais and Gretchen Stelter set a state record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:51.93. Individual state champions also included Trey Bazinet in diving with 90 points, Gretchen Stelter in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.52, and the boys' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Daniel Rubio, Alex Jordan, Jason Good and Eric Song with a time of 1:54.71.
The swim team is coached by Cecilia Emblidge, Andy Chen and Jasmine Bazinet. The dive team is coached by Ben James.
