Police: Female, 16, assaulted by Niantic man, bitten by dog

East Lyme — Police said a 16-year-old female was assaulted early Saturday morning by a Niantic man and was also bit several times by his pit bull during a disturbance at the Elms Motel.

Eric J. Wasniewski, 42, of 46 Spring Glen Road was charged Saturday with first-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree strangulation, third-degree assault, interfering with an emergency call and disorderly conduct.

According to East Lyme Police Sgt. Bill J. Blanchette III, the 16-year-old is not Wasniewski's daughter, and the legal age of consent in Connecticut is 16.

Police were called to the Ocean Avenue motel shortly before 1 a.m., after police said Wasniewski physically assaulted the female, would not allow her to leave and took her cellphone as she tried to call 911 for help.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries, and the pit bull was turned over to the Waterford/East Lyme animal control officer.

Wasniewski was held in lieu of a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Tuesday.
