Wow, talk about getting a great recommendation. None other than Quincy Jones had this to say this about Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodríguez: "He is very special, and I do not say that easily because I have been surrounded by the best musicians in the world my entire life. And he is one of the best."
After seeing Rodríguez at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival, Jones became a mentor and produced his debut release, 2011's "Sounds of Space."
Rodríguez has said the CD is "about the space that surrounds us. In this record I wanted to introduce myself: here are the people, the places and the sounds that have surrounded me, and made me who I am."
Rodríguez performs Friday at Connecticut College, with his trio that includes Peter Slavov on bass and Francisco Mela on drums.
