Buzzy gym: The Food and Drug Administration will study the effect of caffeinated food just as Wrigley debuts "Energy Gum," which promises "the right energy, right now."
Extreme energy chips: The only time the FDA explicitly approved the added use of caffeine in a food or drink was in the 1950s for colas. The proliferation of caffeine added to potato chips and jelly beans is beyond what the agency envisioned.
What's the harm?: Caffeine has been linked to harmful effects on young people's developing neurologic and cardiovascular systems. The agency is already investigating the safety of energy drinks and energy shots, prompted by consumer reports of illness and death.
