Sachem Fund Committee changing grant priorities

Norwich – The Sachem Fund Committee is not yet ready to seek grant applications for the $223,000 remaining in the fund created by the city and the Mohegan Tribe for cultural and economic development projects.

With neither donor making contributions during the tight financial times this year and next year, committee members expressed concern Thursday that any future grant rounds solicit meaningful and lasting projects.

A subcommittee with members Lottie Scott, Mark Brown of the Mohegan tribe and Gary Evans, the city’s community development supervisor, will work on a “scope of work” that could be used for a future request for proposals advertisement.

Mayor Peter Nystrom asked the committee to focus on three main accomplishments -- job creation, measurable impacts on the community and the ability to leverage other grants or funding in matching amounts.

The committee did not set a timetable for advertising the new request for proposals.
