A Mohegan Sun table games manager stood in front of the jury box in a New London courtroom Monday morning and dealt several hands of mini-baccarat as the cheating trial of two New York City men got underway.

Using a cloth mini-baccarat layout, card shoe and other equipment provided by the casino, the state’s first witness, shift and pit manager Robert Gallagher, explained the rituals, bets and odds associated with the game.

Hung Lit Leung, 63, and Leonard Hu, 50, are accused of conspiring with dealers to cheat the casino out of more than $250,000. Investigators say Leung and Hu paid dealers Bong Gate Louie and Jian Bang Ng to mark the seven, eight and nine cards in baccarat and mini baccarat games, giving them an advantage in winning each hand.

Both men had lost more money than they won until they started cheating, according to state police.

As the trial got underway this morning, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Stephen M. Carney said he had reached agreement with the two dealers, who are also charged in the case, on Friday and that both dealers are expected to testify at the trial.

Defense attorney Jeremiah Donovan is representing Hu, while Leung is represented by attorney Conrad O. Seifert. Both men have been free on $30,000 bonds while their cases were pending.

The case is being tried before a jury of six regular members and two alternates and is expected to last six or seven days. Judge Arthur C. Hadden is presiding.
