Worker found dead at Millstone Power Station

Waterford — An electrician working on transformers at the Millstone Power Station was found dead Thursday afternoon on a stairway connecting two non-nuclear areas of the plant.

Ken Holt, spokesman for Millstone, said the woman was employed by Day & Zimmerman, a contractor hired to do maintenance work at the plant. She was found about 1 p.m. by two other plant workers, he said.

“The injury does not appear to be work-related,” Holt said.

The incident is under investigation, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local police were contacted, Holt said.

Sharon Ferruccio, director of marketing and communications for Day & Zimmerman, said the woman was a maintenance modifications contractor. She had no further information about her.

The company has more than 135 workers at the plant, she said.

“This is a very sad time,” she said. “Our greatest sympathies go out to the family.”

NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident because it did not occur in a nuclear-related area of the plant. OSHA officials could not be reached for comment Thursday.
