Mistake for the city to add police dogs

Why would a mayor veto additional dogs to a K-9 unit if the same mayor supports a functional K-9 unit with dogs of diverse training and abilities? Beyond the budget issues, because the implementation of lethal force by the unit's bite-and-hold dogs to date has been racially biased, biased just as the stop-and- frisk measure in New York City. This is a trainer issue, a handler issue, a public safety issue, and a public policy issue that cannot be ignored by creating a cacophony of voices in support of "public safety." Public safety includes all of the public, equally. Until racially disparity issues are addressed, until the unit is audited, until a clear policy is in place protecting residents and visitors in our city, the unit should not expand. Better for New London to bite and hold the issue, than to allow bite-and-hold dogs to be used disproportionately as lethal force against minorities in a municipality.
