    New London hosts Down by the Riverside Festival

    The curious can watch plein air painters at work Saturday.

    Riverside Park will host free family entertainment, activities and a craft show at the 3rd Annual Down by the Riverside Festival Saturday.

    Attendees can enjoy music throughout the day from local bands. Plein air artist paint the landscape; visitors can view the process and then seeing the finish paintings at an art reception on Oct. 19.

    Looking to buy art that day? Browse crafts from local vendors, including BigFeatz Custom Skateboards, Steve Downs Woodworking, and Treefort Naturals Bath & Body Products.

    Children's activities - hosted by the Drop-In Learning Center, the Riverfront Children's Center, and the Thames Valley Council for Community Action - are fun and free entertainment for the kids. And they can also go home with a new bicycle helmet from the Kiwanis Club of New London.

    Join Connecticut College Arboretum Director Glenn Dreyer for a tour of the park's plant life at 11:30 a.m., and learn about new developments and plans for Riverside Park with Sandra Chalk of New London Landmarks at 2 p.m.
