New London – Police said an Orchard Street resident chased and caught a man trying to steal his vehicle early Monday, holding the would-be thief until police arrived.
At 4:02 a.m. police said the unidentified resident awoke to the sound of someone trying to start his vehicle, which was parked in the driveway.
The resident went outside and confronted 23-year-old David Weintraub, who was still in the vehicle, police said. Weintraub fled when confronted but was caught by the resident after a short foot chase.
Police arrived and found Weintraub being held by the resident. Weintraub was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit third-degree larceny and sixth-degree larceny.
Police said they have been in contact with another Orchard Street victim who reported that his vehicle was entered during the night and several items stolen. Personal items belonging to Weintraub were located in the vehicle and seized as evidence, police said.
Held on bond, Weintraub was expected to appear today in New London Superior Court.
