TOP 10 STORIES OF THE YEAR: DISMANTLING PFIZER

The Day's news staff looked back at the biggest local headlines of 2013:

Pfizer Inc. stunned Groton and state officials in March when it decided to tear down its former research headquarters on Eastern Point Road.

Pfizer, which cut 1,100 jobs two years ago, began demolishing the 750,000-square-foot complex known as Building 118 in July.

The loss extends beyond the $2 million in annual local tax revenue. It's altered the psyche of the community and has come to represent the town's lost economic potential.

Eleanor and Zene Gergen, 75, live next door to the Building 118 property.

"It seems to me that this is sort of the beginning of the end," Zene Gergen said in August. "In other words, I just have this feeling they're going to leave."
