Fire ravages 300-year-old home in North Stonington

North Stonington – Fire damaged an unoccupied home at 291 Cossaduck Hill Road on Tuesday, the second fire in less than a week on the same rural stretch of Route 201.

Tuesday's fire was reported at about 9:14 p.m. and the North Stonington Fire Department called for mutual aid from several surrounding towns for manpower and to provide a constant shuttle of water-laden tankers. The area is not serviced by hydrants.

Town records show the two-story home was built in 1700 and owned by Gary Berg, with a mailing address listed in Pawcatuck.

Fire Marshal George Brennan said the cause of the fire remains undetermined but he had spent most of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning investigating.

Brennan said the cause of a fire last Wednesday at 256 Cossaduck Hill Road also remains under investigation. That fire displaced four residents. No injuries were reported.
