Newly appointed state Judge Timothy D. Bates began his career on the bench Thursday in Superior Court in Norwich.

Bates, 66, of Noank, who was a partner with the Robinson and Cole law firm in New London when Gov. Dannel P. Malloy nominated him to the Superior Court in March, has been assigned to hear criminal cases at the court known as Geographical Area 21.

Judge Thomas G. Moukawsher, who was sitting in the criminal court at GA21, has been moved to the New London judicial district courthouse on Huntington Street in New London to assist with civil cases, according to Judge Emmet L. Cosgrove, administrative judge for the New London judicial district.

Judge Karen A. Goodrow, who most recently was assigned to family court in Norwich, has been moved to the family court division in New Haven.
