Norwich - Both sides of Interstate 395 were temporarily closed to all traffic Thursday afternoon to accommodate fire crews working to extinguish a fire that had engulfed and completely destroyed a minivan.
The fire was reported at 5:26 p.m. on the northbound side of I-395, prior to Exit 81. Firefighters from the Yantic Fire Department, with aid from the East Great Plain Fire Department, accessed the vehicle from both sides of the highway.
Yantic Fire Chief Frank Blanchard said firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze without injury. All occupants were out of the vehicle when they arrived.
The fire led to major traffic congestion in the area as the highway was completely shut down for about 15 minutes. Several lanes remained closed for more than an hour as the scene was cleared and a fire marshal was called in to investigate the cause of the fire.
