Earth, Wind & Fire grooves at Mohegan Sun

Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire

What did "Water" and "Sky" do to annoy Maurice White? After all, when White founded what would become one of the greatest R&B acts of all time, he decided to call it Earth, Wind & Fire - using only three of the five principal elements of Japanese Buddhism. He left out Water and Sky - although, to think about it, "Earth, Wind, Sky, Water & Fire" might be hard to fit on a T-shirt.*

In any event, Earth, Wind & Fire has earned six Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards and are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - on the strength of indelible hits like "Let's Groove," "That's the Way of the World," "September," "Sing a Song," "Shining Star" and "Boogie Wonderland."

Hear all these tunes and more when the band plays the Mohegan Sun Arena on Saturday. By the way, this is a freakin' great live band. Whatever kind of music you like or don't like, Earth, Wind & Fire in concert is a significantly great time.

    * This apparently did not bother the New York band When People Were Shorter and Lived Near the Water, but, unlike EW&F, they didn't sell 90,000,000 albums - or, for that matter, T-shirts.

    Earth, Wind & Fire, 8 p.m. Saturday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $45; 1-888-664-3426.
