    Pedestrian struck by car in Norwich remains in critical condition

    Norwich — An 83-year-old Taftville woman who was seriously injured Thursday when she was struck by a 93-year-old driver remains in critical condition at Hartford Hospital, a hospital official said Friday.

    Beverly Brown, 83, was hit at about 9:25 a.m. while crossing West Town Street in a crosswalk in front of the Samuel L. Huntington Elementary School, according to police. As she did every morning, Brown had taken a bus to the school to visit a kindergarten class as part of a TVCCA foster grandparent program, according to school superintendent Abby Dolliver.

    Police identified the driver as 93-year-old Arthur Chmura of Moosup.

    Brown was treated at the scene and initially taken by American Ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital. She was subsequently transferred to Hartford Hospital.

    The investigation into the cause is ongoing and police said no charges were filed against Chmura.
