Norwich – City police swore in a volunteer firefighter and former emergency dispatcher Tuesday as the newest police officer recruit.

Jared Szuba, 22, is to begin his training Wednesday at the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden and expected to graduate in December.

Raised in Lebanon, Szuba is a 2010 Lyman Memorial High School graduate who earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of New Haven earlier this year. Szuba was previously employed as a dispatcher for Colchester Emergency Communications and serves as a volunteer firefighter for the Colchester Hayward Fire Department.

After his graduation from the academy, Szuba is expected to undergo field training before being assigned to a position in the department’s patrol division.
