Waterford, state join for 'aggressive speed enforcement effort'

Waterford – The Waterford Police Department will be working with the state Department of Transportation on a “High Risk Rural Road Speed Enforcement Program.”

Funded through the DOT, the program is an aggressive speed enforcement effort with a goal to reduce motor-vehicle collisions involving speed.

Waterford had approximately 1,655 motor vehicle accidents reported from 2011 through 2013, of which 40 percent occurred on local and collector roads, police said. About 10 percent of those accidents were contributed to speeding or drivers losing control of their vehicles.

The program will provide for additional officers on patrol at targeted high traffic volume areas where speeding and motor-vehicle accidents occur until Sept. 30. Funds will also be made available to purchase speed enforcement equipment.
