Tigers 19U Baseball Fares Well in NEC Tourney

The Madison Tigers 19-U baseball team played in the NEC Tournament the weekend of July 11 to 13, facing the Connecticut Capitals AAU team in the first game, which it won 6-2. Joe Hill threw a complete game for the win and showed why he's one of the team's captains. Bobby Lanza went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the offense. In the second game, the Tigers played the Connecticut Blue Jays and lost 11-4. Jason Vitale took the loss, although the Blue Jays were an excellent hitting team, according to Coach Jon Golicz.

"Overall, Friday for us was a good day, going 1-1 against two teams that we were supposed to have no business playing with," said Golicz.

On July 12, Madison played a night game against the Bronx Dons. Magnus Grigor threw six good innings, twice escaping bases loaded jams by getting double plays. The defense was exceptional, but the Tigers couldn't push across runs when they had the chance. The Dons scored four in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead and Matt Lostocco came in to get out of the inning, needing only five pitches to get two outs with the bases loaded. In the top of the seventh, the Tigers rallied and had runners on first and second with two outs when Blake Egan hit a double down the right field line. Ray Miklos scored the first run easily, but a tough call by the home plate umpire cost Madison the tying run when Kyle Freiman slid under the tag and beat the throw by at least three steps. The Tigers missed the championship round and played a consolation game on July 13 at Fairfield University in which they got mercy-ruled by the Connecticut Tides. Freiman and Tom D'Annolfo threw great games as Madison didn't have any arms left, yet the Tide was too much and Madison lost 13-0.

"Overall, a great weekend for Madison baseball. We played teams that were superior to us on both the offensive, defensive, and even the pitching end of things. It just goes to show how much this team has improved since the start of the season," said Golicz. "Everyone is starting to hit the ball, the pitching has been outstanding, and our defense has really stepped up. I've said it before and I'll say it again-this team has great potential and some great players who love playing the game and have a level of respect for each other that I haven't seen them have in the two years that I've coached them. I'm having a blast coaching this summer and, from the looks of the kids, they're having fun, as well."
