Norwich police: Death of man found in Yantic River not suspicious

Norwich ― Police on Thursday said the death of a man whose body was found in the Yantic River Wednesday evening does not appear to be suspicious, and they are awaiting autopsy results from the state medical examiner.

The state office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy Thursday morning but has not yet identified the man, said Lt. Kyle Besse. Results of toxicology tests also were not available.

Police were alerted by a fisherman Wednesday evening, who said he spotted what appeared to be a human body in the river in Norwichtown. Police and firefighters searched the area and found the body at the base of the Route 2 overpass at the left edge of the Stop & Shop Supermarket parking lot at 42 Town St.
