One man taken to hospital after rollover on New London's Bank Street

New London firefighters work to extricate the victim of a single-car rollover accident on Bank Street that occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday between Pearl and Golden streets. Firefighters used extrication tools to remove the roof of the car in order to get the victim out safely.

New London – One man was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after his car crashed and rolled onto its side in the middle of Bank Street on Saturday night.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said the driver was conscious as he was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Nichols said the severity of the man’s injuries was not immediately known.

A witness said the man’s Hyundai struck the back of a parked Jeep Wrangler before rolling over.

“He hit it and the car flipped on its side and slid for maybe 3 feet,” said Corey Seaquist, who was working the door at Bulkeley House Saloon. “He wasn’t even going that fast.”

The driver of the vehicle, which came to rest on its driver’s side in front of Waterhouse Salon at 136 Bank St., had to be extricated by firefighters using a hydraulic rescue tool to cut off the vehicle’s roof.

Kate Kennedy, who was in Hot Rod Café when she heard the crash, said she ran to the car where the driver told her that he was not seriously hurt.

“He seemed totally coherent and told me that there was no one else in the car and that he wasn’t hurt,” she said.

Bank Street was closed between the city’s fire headquarters and the Hygienic Art Galleries while emergency crews responded to the crash.
