A Connecticut Army National Guard soldier was killed and another injured Thursday morning in a two-vehicle accident on southbound Interstate 95 in Port Chester, N.Y.

The soldiers’ names have not been released.

The soldiers, who were riding in a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle, or LMTV, were headed to Fort Dix, N.J., to turn in spent ammunition shells from a recent training exercise, Col. Michael E. Wieczorek, the Guard’s chief of staff, said in a statement. No live rounds were being transported, he said.

Two additional soldiers were in a military van traveling with the LMTV. The two vehicles had been on the road for less than two hours when the accident occurred around 10:22 a.m., Wieczorek said.

A civilian vehicle was involved in the accident.

Wieczorek said all military drivers receive 40 hours of classroom training followed by 40 hours of vehicle-specific driver training.

“Families are being notified and the Connecticut National Guard will be providing Casualty Assistance Officers and any other aid and support we can to both families,” he said. “We also stand ready to provide support to other guardsmen and women who may be affected by this tragedy.”

Military and civilian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
