East Lyme - The school board will hold focus groups this fall with parents, staff and other stakeholders as it searches for a new superintendent to succeed James Lombardo, who plans to retire in January.
The Superintendent Search Ad Hoc Committee, a subcommittee of the Board of Education, updated the full board on Monday on its plans with the New England School Development Council, the board's search firm.
The committee is finalizing a brochure, with a profile of the school district and the superintendent's job description, that it will send to superintendents throughout New England. NESDEC has also posted a job description for the position on its website and has received several inquiries, said committee member Barbara Senges.
The committee will interview candidates this fall before sending not more than eight candidates for interviews with the full board, said Senges.
The board plans to name a new superintendent in December. Senges said the priority will be to find a candidate who can start as soon after Jan. 1 as possible.
After holding an executive session on Monday, the board also authorized the superintendent, during open session, to enter into a contract with a candidate for interim assistant superintendent. The assistant superintendent candidate was not yet publicly announced.
The district's former assistant superintendent, Brian Reas, has taken a new position as superintendent for East Haddam Public Schools.
