Healthy war debate on Day letters' page

The Day has wisely printed several timely opinions relevant to the Islamic State war. Fr. Constantine J. Simones's letter, "Christian alliance needed to fight ISIS," (Sept. 18), provided some important facts relative to the thousands of Christians murdered by Islamic fascists in the 19th century and the millions of Christians exterminated since.

President Obama is attempting to fight IS with Muslim countries, which Fr. Simones thinks "is an outrage." This opinion is shared by many senior U.S. military advisors.

On Sept. 19 The Day also printed George W. Jackson's letter, "Military needs clear vision of its mission." He stressed how our Naval War College teaches how National Command Authority (our CIC, Mr. Obama) and the military should be used to win wars and how handcuffing the process for political goals leads to disaster and protracted wars. The Islamic State warrior rank has swelled to over 31,500 and our air strikes number 260.

These two opinions by senior experts in their field of church and military state point out another important fact, i.e., the wisdom and power of our First Amendment to the Constitution which should be taught in our schools and remembered by our leaders before we engage in any more wars.
