    H.S. roundup: NFA football team routs Fitch 56-20

    Norwich - Quarterback Jawaun Johnson threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as Norwich Free Academy cruised to a 56-20 football victory over Fitch on Saturday in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division.

    Johnson scored on runs of 31 and 37 in the first half, helping the Wildcats (3-2, 2-0) build a 44-12 halftime lead. Johnson also hooked up with Griffen Gooden for a pair of scores (4 and 38 yards) and completed NFA's scoring with a 58-yard TD strike to Albert Tulli in the third quarter. Johnson completed 6 of 10 passes for 155 yards and had nine carries for 48 yards.

    Khaleed Exum-Strong made the most of his nine carries for the Wildcats, finishing with 125 rushing yards and scoring on a 25-yard run in the third quarter. Exum-Strong also returned a kick 59 yards for a touchdown after the first of NFA's two first-quarter safeties.

    Robert Duncan threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Falcons (0-6, 0-2), a 48-yarder to Luke Letellier and a 4-yarder to Aaron Santos. Cleon Mclish ran five yards for Fitch's final touchdown. Duncan completed 14 of 31 passes for 244 yards while Letellier had six receptions for 145 yards.

    Boys' soccer

    • East Lyme beat Old Lyme, 2-0, in a physical non-conference game to give coach Paul Christensen his 300th career victory. Vasili Fokaidis scored both goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and goalie Billy Bragaw made fives saves for the Vikings (11-1-3) while Quintin Parsons added an assist.

    "It's a testament to the fact that I'm getting old," said Christensen, who pointed to the town's feeder program as one of the reasons for the high school team's success throughout the years.

    Owen O'Donnell stopped eight shots for the Wildcats (9-2-1), who defeated Hale-Ray 3-0 in the Shoreline Conference on Friday night thanks to two goals by Nate Peduzzi and another by Danny Cole.

    • Wadlet Jean-Baptiste scored six minutes into the first overtime as New London qualified for the Class L tournament with a 2-1 win over Windham. Jean-Baptiste, with an assist from Edwin Lobo, gave New London (7-7) a 1-0 lead seven inutes into the first half.

    "It's really big for us,'' said New London coach Mike Wheeler. "This is like the second time in the last 20 years for us making the state tournament.''

    • L.J. Luster scored his second goal of the game with 18 minutes remaining to lift undefeated Bacon Academy past Waterford, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup between the first and seventh ranked teams in the state's Medium-Small soccer poll. The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime. Luster opened the scoring about 10 minutes before intermisson and Waterford's Max Wolfley fired one home off an assist from Dan Castelpoggi. Goalie Austin Schwartz made five saves for the Lancers (10-2-2).

    • Liam Tresnan and Kyle Murphy scored goals for Williams School in a 3-2 loss to Watkinson. Jack Fader had an assist and goalie Ethan Iglehart had 13 saves for the Blues.

    Girls' soccer

    • Izzy Moore chipped home the game-winner at the 66:14 mark, leading unbeaten East Lyme past Old Lyme, 2-1, in a non-conference game. The Vikings (14-0-1) trailed 1-0 before Stephanie deLafarcade's penalty kick late in the first half tied the score. Goalie Gabby Fiengo made five saves for East Lyme. Hannah O'Brien scored for the Wildcats (11-3) and goalie Katherine Petersen had 11 saves.

    • Williams jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead on the way to a 7-0 shutout of Barrington (R.I.) Christian. Paola Vangjeli had two goals and an assist and Abby Smith added two goals for the Blues (8-3-1), who've won six in a row. Cameron Werbinski had a goal and an assist while Britta Widham and Mia Marciano each added a goal and Margot Griscom had two assists.

    Field hockey

    • Williams and Fitch battled to a 2-2 tie in a non-conference game. Maya Holland and Shepherd Caruso each had a goal and Bea Mills chipped in an assist for the Blues while Phoebe Seifeit had two goals and Hannah Millsap added an assist for the Falcons.

    Cross country

    • The Williams boys' and girls' teams both finished first at the school's annual 5K invitational. In the boys' race, Justin Shafner took first to pace the Blues, crossing the finish line in 18:56. Will Jarrett was second (19:46) while James Burris placed ninth (21:52) and Josh Goldstein was 11th (21:56).

    In the girls' race, Maddie Lahm won in 23:22, followed by teammate Hattie Grant (24:08) and Sofia diTommaso (24:48) in the top three. Rachel Goldstein was fifth (27:34) and Sherry Qin was 11th (33:50) for the Blues.
