Calendar turns unique page in fundraising

Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night nor the stares of curious onlookers deterred 12 brave local men from taking part in a unique fundraiser for breast cancer research and patient support.

Tickets are on sale for the reveal party of the Tickled Pink 2015 calendar, organized by the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce. In the calendar, local husbands, colleagues, coaches and consultants bare (almost) all to raise money for Lawrence + Memorial Hospital Cancer Center and the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation. Their modesty is preserved with the assistance of a variety of pink accessories — the signature color of breast cancer awareness — and the results are funny, sweet and often endearing.

Many of the models and photographers who donated their time have a personal connection to this disease.

“Cancer has taken so much from me and my family that I welcome almost any opportunity to raise money for cancer research,” said local attorney Neal Bobruff, who has run the Boston Marathon to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute four times. “My wife has spoken at funerals for three of her best friends who died from cancer, and cancer took her father. ... Both my mother and her mother had breast cancer.”

Although the cause is serious, the calendar is an opportunity to share hope and laughter, said Lisa Konicki, chamber president and organizer of the fundraiser.

“I agreed [to take part] simply because of the cause — cancer has been a disease both my parents battled and won. I also enjoy making people laugh, which they will when they see my photo,” said Nick Castagna, of Ray’s Haircutting in Westerly.

The photos of the men will be revealed during the celebration Tuesday (Oct. 28) at 6 p.m. at the historic Granite Theatre, 1 Granite St., Westerly. Tickets are $40, include a calendar, cocktails and refreshments, and are available at the chamber or by calling 401.596.7761. Can’t make it to the event? You can still pick up a calendar at the chamber, 1 Chamber Way (off Route 1) during business hours.
