Local train passengers win with Amtrak reversal

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Wednesday the state’s intervention caused Amtrak to back off on a decision not to honor Shore Line East tickets on two of its trains.

“Since taking office, we have made investments to improve reliability and expand service on Shore Line East and residents have responded by using this rail line more and more,” Malloy said in a statement. “Amtrak’s decision to cross-honor these tickets fits right in with our ongoing efforts to increase ridership on Shore Line East by making this commuter line a more convenient, attractive alternative to driving.”

Amtrak originally decided to stop honoring Shore Line East tickets on its Train 174 departing from New Haven at 8:37 a.m. and arriving in New London at 9:26 a.m. It also said it would stop honoring Shore Line East tickets on Train 190 departing New Haven at 3:44 p.m. and arriving in New London at 4:35 p.m.

“When I learned of this decision, I immediately informed Amtrak that it was unacceptable for the many customers who ride these trains on a daily basis,” Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker said in a statement.

According to Redeker, Amtrak “immediately reconsidered and reversed the decision,” which would have gone into effect Wednesday.

“No commuters were inconvenienced,” Redeker said.

Malloy announced earlier this year that Shore Line East ridership hit a record 63,959 passenger trips in July.

Shore Line East hosts stations in New Haven, Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Westbrook, Old Saybrook and New London. For more information, go to www.shorelineeast.com.
