High school football roundup: NFA keeps rolling

Norwich - Khaleed Exum-Strong rushed for 239 yards and three touchdowns as Norwich Free Academy won its fourth straight game with a 44-8 football victory over Woodstock Academy on Friday night.

The Wildcats (6-2) also kept the CIAC Class LL playoff hopes alive heading into a Thanksgiving Day showdown with rival New London.

Exum-Strong had only 15 carries, averaging 15.9 yards per carry. He scored on runs of 11, 23 and 3 for NFA, which broke the game open with a 27-point second quarter.

Quarterback Jawayn Johnson also had a rushing night, finishing with 134 yards on five carries and scoring on touchdown runs of 51 and 9 yards. He also threw a 27-yard touchown pass to Griffen Gooden.

    In other games and news:

    • Windham broke open a tight game with three touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a 47-13 win over Stonington. The Whippets (8-1) led 15-6 before Gilberto Torres scored on runs of 18 and 1 yards and Brody Labbe threw a 19-yard toucudown pass to Joseph Santiago on the final play of the first half to give Windham a 35-6 lead.

Jack Riordan and Nick Turrisi ran for touchdowns for the Bears (5-5).

    • Steve Jankowski threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score as Plainfield beat St. Bernard/Norwich Tech 42-6 in an ECC Small Division game. The Panthers (8-1, 1-1), who have won five straight, led 22-0 after one quarter and 36-6 at halftime.

Jankowski threw touchdown passes of 46, 57 and 8 yards to Tyler Ballard and broke off a 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Cody Alday also caught a touchdown pass and Hunter Griffin ran for a 29-yard score.

Steve Sieczkowski scored on a 3-yard run for St. Bernard/Norwich Tech (1-8, 0-4). Matt Martinez rushed for 85 yards on 17 carries for the Saints.

    • The ECC principals approved enrollment-based divisions for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 academic years with the only real major change involving football. With St. Bernard/Norwich Tech's departure next fall for the Constitution State Conference, ECC football (per league bylaws) will switch from a 15-team, three-division format to a 14-team, two-division format for the next two seasons.

The Large Division (with male enrollment figures in parentheses) will be comprised of NFA (1,140), Fitch (565), East Lyme (537), New London (505), Woodstock Academy (490), Bacon Academy (467) and Ledyard (422), although Woodstock will not be eligible for the championship because the league is allowing it to opt out of games against division members NFA, New London and Ledyard.

The Small Division will be comprised of Waterford (411), Killingly (398), Stonington (374), Montville (348), Plainfield (333), Windham (301) and Griswold (282). Each school will be guaranteed nine games - six within their own division and three crossovers with the other division.
